After i made my PK Moveswap Hack a few weeks back, I noticed that there were some issues with the Battle Text concerning certain PSI moves, so i took it upon myself to edit the battle text via the Mother 3 Translations Tools. But due to how the translation tools work, i realized I had to retranslate the entire script (i.e., copy and paste all the English text again) to fix up the script errors.
Shortly afterwards i found out there was a Mother 3 Sprite Editor and Mother 3 Enemy Sprite Inserter, and i realized, if i was re-translating the entire script anyways, i could go even further ahead with this, and that’s when the idea for this hack came into my mind.
NOTE: I know some of you might remember a similar hack to this in the past called, Claus’s Adventure, which was only a sprite change hack replacing Lucas with Claus and Claus with Lucas Well no worries, i talked to Giygas99, the creator of that hack, and he gave me his blessing to make expand on his Claus Adventure hack and go further with it.
Now i am making this hack i’ve dubbed the Claus’s Journey Hack. With it, i’ve altered all the sprites to convert Lucas into Claus, as well as altered the story to reflect Claus’s personality and how people react to him, as well as his character development. (i can’t change story events, but i can alter the dialogue to a strong degree, but there are limits to what I can do. So as such, i had to alter Lucas’s and Claus’s personalities slightly to better fit the narrative and events of the stories, which is why some things play out with the same end result. Please keep this in mind.)
Now, there’s multiple versions of this hack for different kinds of people. There’ll be 3 different versions, each changing gameplay, but the story remains the same between them.
First, is the “Normal” version, which has only minimal gameplay changes (Claus learns PK Thunder and Kumatora loses it, but they keep their other moves).
Second, is a version of my “PK Moveswap” Hack and major changes to balance the game for this version, (Claus and Kumatora swap PSI movesets entirely for a different change of gameplay pace, Kumatora gets the Defensive PSI and Claus gets the Offensive PSI, for people who wanna experience the Claus hack as well as have a fresh change of gameplay as well)
And Third, is a version that is entirely new, and the one i consider to be more true to the “Canon” of my hack, and that is the “Combined PSI” version. (I altered Claus and Kumatora’s Movesets to be more like the Paula and Poo of the group rather than the Ness and Paula, which means, they both have a variety of both Offensive and Defensive PSI in their movesets, so for example, Claus learns all of the different levels of Thunder, and up to Gamma level of Freeze, while Kumatora learns all the levels of Freeze and all of the PK Fire series.)
Special thanks to Lorenzooone for hacking the ROM and swapping the Kid Lucas inventory and battle sprites with Kid Claus’s, and going above and beyond by editing Lucas’s adolescent Battle Sprite to look like Claus, as well as helping me to properly alter the Masked Man Battle sprites. I owe ya man.
Also thanks to NoUsernameAvailable (yes, that’s what he asked to be called) for helping me by working on the ROM with Mother 3 funland in order to change the color palettes of both Lucas and Claus so i could make them look like their respective original sprites.
And lastly, thanks to Otherguy, who helped me to alter all the enemy values for the Moveswap hack so PK Love for Kumatora would work properly and not function as PK Fire.
One last thing. There are a few rare instances where Lucas and Claus’s sprites will change color, as i could not change the color palettes on those sprites to give them their exact colors. Those instances are, when Claus is on the saturn table, on a boat, when he’s wearing a Pigmask Helmet, and when Lucas does a certain animation in the roll call. Otherwise, the sprites are faithful to their original designs.
And lastly, I would like you guys to report any bugs/typos you find. Here are the known bugs that i’ve found in this hack:
Unfixed Bugs:
1. Kid Claus’s forward running sprites are messed up with his hair, i can’t fix that, it’s just how Lucas’s hair was programmed to be animated with his sprite. Same goes for his shivering sprite.
2. For some reason, DP shows up as ED in the inventory menu and when you’re buying/selling stuff. I have not yet figured out how to fix this issue.
Fixed Bugs:
Textbox Bug has been solved! Fixed as of v. 1.01!
The Original Pigmask and Recon Mech enemies had the wrong Burn values for the Moveswap variation of the hack. Fixed as of v. 1.02!
Claus should learn Lifeup Beta in the moveswap hack around level 30, and defense up alpha should be removed for balancing sake. Both fixed as of v.1.03!
Fixed Typos/Text Errors:
Salsa’s “Monkey Mimic” skill has for some reason lost it’s name in the Skill Menu during battle. You can still use the move but it appears invisible despite being in the same slot. Fixed as of v. 1.02!
Claus says " got so mad" instead of “He got so mad” when talking about Lucas running away to kill the Drago at Hinawa's grave. Fixed as of v. 1.02!
The Zombie Man enemy is named “Zombien Man” by mistake. Fixed as of v. 1.02!
error where when an enemy says “It spread spores” it just says “04 EF”. Fixed as of v.1.03!
error where, when the omega version of the moves PSI Magnet, Defense Up/Down, Offense Up/Down are used, it says “tried (insert move here) Alpha!” always. Fixed as of v.1.03!
Sorry for this long wall of text, but, one final thing. Treat this like you would any Mother game, search and inspect everything, talk to every NPC, even at different times in the plot and after small events occur, so you can see all that i’ve changed in this hack and get the most out of it. My hack rewards those who go out of their way to inspect and find the little details.
I’ll be labeling each patch for each version of the hack in the titles, to reflect the different gameplay variations. I really hope you guys enjoy this hack of mine. : )
IMPORTANT NOTE: For the Patch, i recommend patching an English Patched ROM, as I made the patches off of those versions of the ROM. Do not use a Japanese ROM when patching.
EDIT: Version 1.03 is now a go! I have fixed up typos that people have notified me of, as well as a certain error in the Moveswap version of the hack.
From now on, Updates and Fixes in each patch will be listed under the “Known Bugs/Typos” section of the post.
EDIT 2: THE FINAL VERSION, VERSION 1.04, IS OUT. Like I stated before, this new version has updated dialogue that’s been better polished, but also has changed dialogue for 2 new areas (the toilet dungeon and porky’s mini games), as well as other areas. It also alters the King Porky Statue boss fight to be winnable via normal means and give greater rewards as a result. I also added new dialogue to other areas that weren’t there before, see if you can find them.
